With consistent screening and follow-up, cervical cancer can be the simplest gynecologic form of cancer to prevent. Two screening tests – performed by Fresno OB-GYN Dr. Gail Mallard-Warren – can
help prevent cervical cancer or identify it earlier.
Two types of tests are implemented for cervical cancer screening:
- The Pap smear identifies any changes in the cells on the cervix that could evolve into cervical cancer if they are not treated correctly and on a timely basis.
- The HPV test looks for the human papillomavirus virus (HPV) that can prompt changes in these cells.
The Pap smear is recommended for all female patients who are between the ages of 21 and 65 years old, and is usually performed in your Fresno OB-GYN’s office.
During the test, she will gently spread your vagina open using a plastic or metal instrument, which allows her to examine the vagina and the cervix, and collect samples of cells and secretions from the area to send to the lab for additional testing.
At this time your OB-GYN may also perform a pelvic exam to examine your ovaries, uterus and additional organs to verify there are no remaining abnormalities.
If you are a female between the ages of 21 and 65 years old, it’s important that you continue getting a Pap smear even if you think you are too old to get pregnant or are no longer engaged in sexual activity. If you are older than 65 and have had normal Pap test results for a number of consecutive years, or if you had your cervix removed as part of a hysterectomy, your OB-GYN may suspend your Pap testing.
If it’s time for your cervical cancer examination, and you are in need of a caring and experienced OB-GYN Fresno CA residents rely on the professional and caring staff at the office of Dr. Gail Mallard-Warren.
