Fresno OB-GYN Dr. Gail Mallard-Warren uses endometrial ablation for the treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding in her patients. The procedure involves the surgical demolition of the tissues that line the uterus (endometrium).
The abnormal bleeding is typically the result of a non-cancerous disorder, but is not a viable treatment option when bleeding is caused by cancer of the uterus because the cancerous cells might be situated in the deepest tissues of the uterus and therefore can’t be removed using this procedure.
Endometrial ablation is only performed on women who are not pregnant and don’t plan on trying to conceive in the future. It is not performed if the patient is currently experiencing an active infection located in the genital tract. This procedure, however, is not the first line of treatment for heavy bleeding and should only be considered when other therapies have been unable to control the bleeding.
Prior to the process, your Fresno OB-GYN will conduct an endometrial biopsy to rule out the possibility of cancer. For younger women in particular, hormonal therapy may be recommended in the weeks leading up to the procedure to shrink the endometrium to an extent where ablation therapy has the best chance for success. The belief is that the thinner the endometrium, the greater the possibility for effective ablation.
The type of anesthesia required during the procedure depends upon which method is being performed. Some procedures can be completed with minimal anesthesia in your OB-GYN’s office while others are done on an outpatient basis.
